part of tommy's independent cooking project that he has been working on throughout the year, is a research component. he is looking at what the pioneers ate when they arrived in new zealand. this is an old favourite of mine and i make it every summer when the plums are plentiful - but as the project is nearing completion we bought pluot plums all the way from california - naughty i know. the dish is called leg of lamb with 20 plums and is as simple as the ingredients on the table. my apologies to any vegetarians looking in (prairie is less than impressed!) the leg is seasoned with olive oil, salt and pepper then put in the roasting pan with the 20 plums. it is covered and put in a low oven for eight hours. its afternoon and its starting to smell tantalizing after almost four hours. it literally spoons off the bone when it is done and of course the plums turn into sauce. i think we shall eat by candlelight and toast those who came before us.
while i wait i knit. i couldn't resist sewing a few squares together. i'm sure the pioneer housewife was not lounging in front of the tennis but scrubbing the doorstep or some such activity!
Oh how I want to come over for dinner! I bet that the pioneer woman would have preferred to have been tucked up in front of the tennis!
