i'll start with what i have begun calling the bermies. berm is a term i was not familiar with - we call it a verge but thanks to melissa - there is a new word in the household lexicon! this morning i decided these bermies were not going to get any bigger and it was time to harvest them. they are about 4 - 5 inches across. i think i will roast them whole. we will keep the subversive berm thing going. we have some cavolo nero seedlings on the go so when they get hardy i'll put some of those out there - along with the borage that is coming up by itself.
another green thing in the garden this morning was the satsuma mandarins. i wish i had a whole row of these little trees - i love this fruit and i love that it arrives with winter just when you think all the fruit is over.
not green but harvesty - we have a big old horse chestnut in the garden that doesn't fail to delight us every year with the treasures it drops. not edible but we still gather every one we find!
and from last night - from the garden - our winter greens. we have stopped buying greens and i am still in awe at this. we have three beds full of perpetual spinach, regular popeye spinach, mesclun, asian greens and rocket. it is more than enough to feed us and the guineas. i love gathering a basketful every night. i have to admit though, we eat it heartily and those children nibble nervously! but when i put this plate out prairie made me get the camera. slowly slowly!
and because i appear to be on a gardening/food bender this morning - cheeseburger dinner from a couple of nights ago. of course the cow was boughten but i made the burger - next time i will make the buns. oh i am hungry now!
I think that you have a wonderful lot of vegetables and fruits in your garden. And you are so good at using it all. It's very inspirering. :)
I feel the same way about chestnuts....my children and I always pick them up. They are indeed treasures as you say...
Finally I must praise you once more for your fantastic way of decorating the window. Those mice are simply fabulous along with all the rest. :))
Enjoy the weekend. :))
