i managed to get a little work done today even while minding my friends new bakery while she went out and did her deliveries. it was fun to play shop and she has an old fashioned register that you have to pull the handle down so as to open it. i felt like milly molly mandy when she looked after the haberdashery shop. my dress, alas was not pink and white stripes!

five more! i haven't posted for so long because my hands have been wrapped around a pair of knitting needles or gripping a crochet hook for dear life. and there has been no decent light to take photos. it has been a freezing springtime with the odd little taste of warm days to come.
and this is our new side board which we have put in the lounge. i'm glad i took this photo yesterday because last night we were all in bed and i heard a crash. knowing that the cats had knocked something over i didn't worry about it too much but this morning we came down to find the hurricane lamp off the sideboard all over the floor in a million very mean looking pieces. naughty moggies. it will be a one way cat door from now on.
i have been working on my toy order so perhaps tomorrow (light permitting) i'll manage a friday wip.

i can't stop! prairie thought this one looked like ice cream. please note lovely pegs, they are the best pegs. ever. the cotton is really nice to knit and i curled up last night in front of 24 (still running here) and knitted myself silly. when prairie came down this morning we watched 'as told by ginger' (such a sweet cool toon) and i finished it! roll on tonight!
we have just had 3 weeks of school holidays so there was a fair bit of fimo-ing going down. the fashion girls are made by prairie and the fimo boys by tommy. i love the way they get lost in their task when they work with fimo. they hum away or chat to each other and calm prevails. after 3 weeks this is golden! my mum used to make beads in the 70s. we thought it was the coolest stuff, that and dippity do. liquid cellohane, how fanastic. everyone had a dippity do bouquet on their stair landing or hall table. not so good to dust though! mum burnt the fimo beads once and it looked and smelt like cat poos. this has scarred me for life and i am always very careful when i bake it now terrified of a repeat!

we have been away for a few days to visit michael's parents who live about 6 hours south of where we live. thats including coffee and beach stops. they live in new plymouth which has mountain and surf on the rugged west coast. it is a little old fashioned town and we always have a good old poke around the shops when we are there. this time a little department store was going out of haberdashery so i went a bit mad and drove the poor women behind the counter mad as they counted 30 metres of each colour of bias binding and often lost count and had to start again. it was 10c a metre so i bought lots and lots and lots and of course came away wishing i had got more. i grabbed a spool of waxed thread that i know will come in handy, for what? any ideas? and the cotton thread was only $1 a spool. it was all very exciting.
then we went to a thrift store after that and got prairie what appear, a new pair of levis for $7 and these little goodies in the photo. i love the vintage ric rac and that was 50c a card! the knitting needles i thought were pretty, like i really need another pair of knitting needles. one day i'll take a photo of my needles and you will see why! the wooden box was a dollar and i thought when we finish painting prairie's bed with the milk paint i'd put a coat on that as well and use it for sewing essentials.
on the way back to auckland we stopped at a second hand store in a weeny town and found the worlds weeniest tupperware! it was a key ring but i cut off the bit on the lid for the chain and we will put it in the doll house. its so cute! it was a long trip back but i bought a talking book - bill bryson's 'life and times of the thunderbolt kid' great being read aloud to when you travel and nice to hear his voice reading his words. sweet stuff although we thought it time to take a rest when he started talking about sex and the nine year old ears in the back seat sprung to attention!
when i came downstairs this morning i could see through the front door and there was a box on the steps. my peaches and cream cotton i ordered a while back! i ordered the mason dixon pack so i had to photograph it before i could start knitting it! i said a while back that it was going to be a dishcloth christmas! i'm not joking!

this arrived in my letterbox a couple of days ago from the lovely simmy! she saw it at the craft show she has just been to and thought i might like it. she was on the money! i love it! it is full of very cool fibre applications - old skills, modern uses. thank you simmy. always such a treat to get a surprise!!
these fabrics i picked up on my way to pick up tommy from my parent's house. there is a quilting store in the country called 'grandmother's garden' in the bottom of someones home spilling out into their lovely garden. they are 30s inspired feedsack prints. there were so many i had trouble choosing. i limited myself to six and bought eight! they will go perfectly with the woven labels i have ordered which are white with red type. i can't wait for those to arrive. have to make the toys for them to go on first! school holidays here, and for another week so not too much getting done and i'm finding it harder and harder working at the dining table. when we renovate i will have my own space but until then i may even look for somewhere so that my children stop finding thread or stuffing in their dinner!
